Easy No-Sew Plaid Christmas Ornament Tutorial

For Ally's first Christmas I switched to plastic ornaments, at least for the bottom of the tree. They've become a bit shabby and uninspiring so I decided to perk them up with some plaid fabric. Here's how I did it...

Old (or new) plastic ornaments
Hot Glue Gun
Plaid Fabric

Here are the plastic ornaments I was working with. Take the hook off first.

I found some pretty, sparkly tartan plaid fabric at Jo-Ann on Black Friday weekend. It was a steal!
Use any plaid you like. Smaller scale prints are best.

Then cut strips of fabric, using only the middle section of the plaid (see below).

Cut those strips in half...

Then hot-glue the fabric onto the ornament, starting at the top.

Put a dab of hot glue at the bottom to secure the strip in place.

Bring the strip around to the top and glue it again. Cut the strip.

Repeat this process until the ornament is completely covered.

Then replace the hook (I secured it with hot glue).

That's it. A super easy update to your old Christmas ornaments.
You can use other fabrics or plaid ribbon too.

Thanks for looking!

  1. Love this! I plan on doing the same even with Styrofoam balls!

  2. I have a container of old bulbs. Now I know what to do with them. Thank you
